CenPEG Press Statement on the Philippines-U.S.-Australia Joint Sail in the SCS/WPS

The think tank Center for People Empowerment in Governance (CenPEG) expresses deep concern over the recent joint maritime patrol conducted by the Philippines, the United States, and Australia in the West Philippine Sea/South China Sea, as reported by The Philippine Star on April 30, 2025. While the stated objective of these exercises is to uphold freedom of navigation and reinforce regional security, such actions risk escalating tensions in an already volatile region.

Prof. Bobby Tuazon, CenPEG's Director for Policy Studies, emphasizes that "the Philippines' increasing alignment especially under the Marcos government with U.S.-led military initiatives compromises and risks our nation's sovereignty and undermines the principle of an independent foreign policy. Engaging in joint military activities with foreign powers in contested waters not only provokes neighboring countries but also unnecessarily entangles the Philippines in geopolitical rivalries that do not serve our national interest."

The deployment of advanced military assets and the conduct of joint drills in the West Philippine Sea/Soth China Sea may be perceived as aggressive posturing, potentially inviting retaliatory measures and heightening the risk of conflict. Such developments could adversely affect the safety and well-being of Filipino communities, particularly those in coastal communities.

CenPEG urges the Marcos government to step back its participation in foreign-led military operations that compromises national sovereignty and regional stability. As constitutionally-enshrined, we advocate for a foreign policy rooted in diplomacy, peaceful conflict resolution, and mutual respect among nations. Engaging in constructive dialogue and multilateral negotiations remains the most viable path to lasting peace and security in the region.###
