The Center for People Empowerment in Governance (CenPEG) expresses its profound outrage over the continuing disorder, political maneuvering, and apparent efforts to undermine accountability in the Philippine Senate.

ย

The Senate was never intended to be a sanctuary for lawbreakers, a refuge from accountability, or a venue where political power can be used to frustrate the operation of justice. It is a constitutional institution entrusted with the solemn duty of making laws, exercising oversight, protecting public resources, and upholding the rule of law.

ย

When the Senate becomes a battleground for partisan schemes, political theatrics, and attempts to shield public officials from scrutiny, it betrays the very purpose for which it exists. The Filipino people did not elect senators to evade accountability. They elected them to uphold it.

ย

"The Senate is not an institution where accountability goes to die,"ย said CenPEG Chairperson Prof. Roland G. Simbulan. "It was established to strengthen democratic governance and uphold the rule of law. Any attempt to transform it into a sanctuary for those seeking to escape public accountability is a grave insult to the Constitution and to the Filipino people."

ย

Recent events have raised serious questions about whether some political actors are using parliamentary procedures and institutional power not to serve the public interest but to delay, obstruct, or derail legitimate processes of accountability. Such actions erode public trust and weaken democratic institutions.

ย

The Senate must never become a shield for impunity. It must never be used to protect those facing serious allegations of wrongdoing, regardless of political affiliation, personal alliances, or position in government.

ย

The law must apply equally to all.

ย

Equally disturbing is the example being set before the nation. Senators occupy some of the highest positions of public trust in the Republic. Their conduct shapes public expectations of leadership and influences how future generations understand democracy, public service, and citizenship.

ย

"Our senators should be exemplars of statesmanship, integrity, and responsible leadership,"ย Prof. Simbulan added.ย "The youth of our country are watching. They deserve leaders who demonstrate respect for democratic institutions, civility in public discourse, and fidelity to the rule of lawโ€”not political grandstanding, disorder, or self-serving conduct."

ย

At a time when the country faces pressing economic, social, environmental, and governance challenges, the Filipino people deserve a Senate focused on legislation, oversight, and public serviceโ€”not spectacle, disruption, and political self-preservation.

ย

CenPEG calls upon all senators to restore the dignity of the institution, respect constitutional processes, and place the national interest above factional loyalties and personal ambitions. The Senate must recommit itself to its historic role as a guardian of democratic accountability and a defender of the public trust.

ย

The Filipino people deserve no less. ###
