In recent days, continuous heavy monsoon rains intensified by a tropical disturbance have caused widespread flooding across Metro Manila, affecting numerous communities and disrupting daily life. Several low-lying areas in Quezon City, Manila, Caloocan, Marikina, and Malabon were submerged, with floodwaters reaching chest-deep levels in some barangays.
Thousands were displaced, with many taking shelter in evacuation centers lacking adequate resources.
Also, classes and work are suspended in several cities due to unsafe road conditions and flood risks.
Major roads and transport lines, including parts of EDSA, C5, and LRT/MRT stations, experienced delays or closures.
There were numerous reports of damaged homes, loss of livelihood, and rising cases of waterborne illnesses in flooded communities.
The situation is worsened by clogged drainage systems, urban congestion, and insufficient disaster preparedness in vulnerable zones. Local government units, rescue teams, and civil society organizations are actively responding, but urgent relief support remains critical to address the growing humanitarian needs.
In this regard, CenPEG is calling on us all to respond in our little ways-- CenPEG is issuing this call for donations and immediate relief, while continuing our advocacy work on addressing the peoples' vulnerabilities on calamities and people-centered governance.
