Shanghai Academy scholars in discussion with Philippine academics on Belt and Road

CenPEG Fellows Temario C. Rivera, also Board chair, and Bobby M. Tuazon, director for policy studies, joined other academics and think tank scholars in a discussion with scholars from the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS) last Sept. 11, 2018. The exchange of ideas centered on China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), trends in ASEAN regional integration, and Philippine-China relations.

Organized by the Asia Pacific Pathways to Progress Foundation, Inc. (APPFI), the roundtable discussion was held at the University of the Philippines’ National Engineering Center (CEC).

The Chinese scholars from the SASS’ Institute of the Applied Economics were: Sun Fuqing, Research Professor and Director, Institute of the Applied Economics, SASS; Li Zhan, Research Professor and Deputy Director, Institute of the Applied Economics, SASS; Li Xiaonian, Research Professor, Director of the Research Institute of Silk Road on the Sea, Institute of the Applied Economics, SASS; Xu Limei, Vice Research Professor, Institute of the Applied Economics, SASS; and Zhang Yan, Assistant Research Professor, Institute of the Applied Economics, SASS.

Other discussants included: APPPFI trustee, former Philippine ambassador to ASEAN Wilfrido Villacorta; Aaron Jed Rabena, program convenor of APPPFI’s regional integration and connectivity program; Epictetus Patalinghug, professor emeritus of UP’s School of Business; Jaime Naval and Li Meiting, both from UP political science department; and Lucio Pitlo III, APPPFI Fellow and Ateneo professor.
